First Powerball Jackpot of 2024 Delivers $38.4 Million for New York Schools
End-of-year jackpot roll generated millions of dollars in aid to education and New York Lottery retailer commissions

The first Powerball jackpot of the new year, while won in Michigan, brought a combined $45 million for New York public schools and New York Lottery retailers.

The Powerball jackpot rolled 35 times before the winning ticket was drawn on New Year’s Day. In New York State, Powerball ticket sales totaled $109.6 million during the run. All New York Lottery profits from sales are constitutionally dedicated to New York’s K-12 public schools, totaling $38.4 million for this most recent roll. Commissions on Powerball sales paid to retailers across the state totaled $6.6 million.

“New York’s schools and small businesses win every time a lottery ticket is purchased,” said Gaming Commission Chair Brian O’Dwyer. “The millions of dollars generated with every jackpot underscore the significant role the New York Lottery plays in supporting public education and retailers across the state. As we venture into 2024, the New York Lottery will continue to create responsible and entertaining games for New Yorkers while also generating real revenue for our state’s public schools.”

Multiple New Yorkers won prizes totaling $10.8 million in prizes of $50,000 or more during the Powerball roll up between October 14 and January 1, 2024, including:

  • One Powerplay second prize winner of $2 million
  • Five second prize winners of $1 million
  • Three Powerplay third prize winners of $150,000
  • Five Powerplay third prize winners of $100,000
  • 52 third prize winners of $50,000

The New York Lottery continues to be North America's largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.7 billion in Lottery Aid to Education for FY 2022-2023 to help support education in New York State.
