New York State promotes responsible gaming across all forms of legal gambling and has measures in place to provide help to those who need it. Learn how to self-exclude from all gaming in New York State, get free confidential help, and more information about problem gambling.

Tips for Being a Responsible Player
  • Set time and money limits - and stick to them. 
  • Don’t gamble to escape feelings of anxiety, stress or depression. 
  • Know where to get help for gambling problems (see resources below).
  • Don’t gamble with money needed to pay bills. 
  • Don’t make gambling your only source of entertainment.
  • Know the odds of the games you choose to play; expect to lose more times than you win.
  • Tell friends and family not to gift Lottery tickets to anyone under 18 years old.*

*Research has shown that the earlier a person begins to gamble the more likely they are to develop a gambling problem later in life.

The New York State Gaming Commission, the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), and the New York Council on Problem Gambling formed the Responsible Play Partnership (RPP) to coordinate and raise awareness of problem gambling treatment services.

Responsible Gaming Accreditation

NASPL NCPG Responsible Gambling Verified

The Gaming Commission's Division of the Lottery has earned responsible gaming accreditation from the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) following independent reviews of the Lottery’s responsible gambling measures. An independent assessment panel appointed by NCPG and NASPL determined the New York Lottery meets or exceeds responsible gambling industry best practices in the areas of planning, employee training, retailer training, public education and awareness, product oversight, research, advertising, and resources.
